January Portland Trip

Hannah and I are looking forward to a very productive week in Portland, OR filled with rehearsals, music videos, guest-artist lectures, mock auditions, and a concert. It shouldn’t surprise me anymore how much we are able to pack into a week together. In addition to the rehearsals and practicing, we also plan to check a bunch of paperwork items off the list. Hannah will still teach her University classes during part of the week.

We are excited to add some lovely, new-to-us pieces to our rotation of concert repertoire:  Amy Beach’s Romance, Op. 23, and William Grant Still’s “Suite for violin and piano.” Such fun music!

My Itinerary:

Sunday, Jan 21: Fly out of Huntsville, AL; arrive in Portland around 10:35 pm; check in to Hostel.

Monday, Jan 22: Recording the music video for the waltzes and the musical examples for the SAM video; rehearsal.

Tuesday, Jan 23: New headshots and album cover art; rehearsal. Check out of hostel.

Wednesday, Jan 24: Rehearsal; University of Portland “Music at Midweek” guest artist lecture-recital; paperwork paperwork paperwork.  Stay with Hannah’s family for the rest of the week.

Thursday, Jan 25: Mock audition for one of Hannah’s students; rehearsals all day.

Friday, Jan 26: Dress rehearsal for concert, then concert at the Community Music Center, Portland, OR.

Upcoming Travels: Washington, D.C. and Boyce, VA

I’ll be heading out to Washington D.C. tomorrow! Catching a shuttle up to Nashville and flying directly into Washington Reagan Airport on Southwest. Here’s the itinerary:

July 24-August 7, Hannah and I are in Washington, D.C. and Boyce, VA.  Week 1 we are spending in D.C. leading up to the week of the recording session, so that we can have plenty of rehearsal and practice time, and also acclimate to the Eastern Time Zone. A 3-hour time difference for Hannah meant that we didn't feel comfortable flying to VA the day or two before the recording session -- neither of us play our best at 5:30-6:30 am!

Week 2 we will spend in Boyce, VA -- lodging in nearby Winchester, VA. Every day we will head to the studio and work with the Sono Luminus team, until all the music is recorded and we are finished with the recording process! Then comes the editing, mixing, mastering, writing liner notes, artwork, manufacturing, and last but not least, planning the promotional tours and concerts for the album’s release.  Stay tuned -- more soon!

Well, this was Duo Odéon’s last week of rehearsals until our recording session in July! I came back to Portland, OR from June 26 - July 6, where we had another Northwest Previews interview at All Classical Portland, this time with Andrea Murray. It was a lovely experience! We also performed at a retirement center and at a neighborhood coffee shop called Taborspace. I stayed with my friend Kate again (the AirBnb host near Reed College), and it was wonderful to see her again!

At Taborspace, we gave the first public performance of the first and third movements of Antheil’s Violin Concerto, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We couldn’t play the whole thing due to time constraints - the entire concerto is around 45 minutes long.

The Coffee with Antheil concert was a nice change of pace from the normally-formal evening recitals.
